On Tuesday, September 24, the Selma High School Girls Water Polo team won another game. They beat Mission Oak High School 14 – 7. Their preseason has been extremely promising. They’ve won nine games and lost five. At a recent tournament in Arroyo Grande, the team placed fourth out of sixteen competitive teams.

The team hopes to carry this momentum into their regular season, which began on Tuesday, October 2nd against Kingsburg High School.

“I feel that this season is going very well and I hope that we keep doing great in our division,” said junior Arriella Alvarez, who is the team’s goalie.

As they kick off the new season, the team is very conscious of what they can improve upon to be more competitive.

“I could be more comfortable with different plays and being more aggressive,” said sophomore Abigail Baker.

Though the team always finds ways to improve, they are still confident in their abilities and recognize the things that give them a competitive edge.

“I’m very happy with the way we’ve been playing and connecting as a team,” reflects senior Claire Machado, a driver for the team.

“The team is good at communication skills, which help us know who is gonna do what and how to carry out plays,” added sophomore Brooke Machado.

With these things in mind, they are going into the season with a positive attitude and high hopes. They are going to do their best to make Selma High School proud.

They want the school to realize that water polo is fun and intense, and they would love the support of the student body at their games.

“Water polo isn’t very popular on campus, but having the extra support makes a huge difference in creating a positive atmosphere for the game,” stated Claire Machado.

“Our girls deserve your interest,” concluded Coach Wood.

There are high hopes for the girls water polo team, and the season has only just begun.
